The Rev. and Mrs. Richard Swartout have returned from a holiday visit to the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Major and Mrs. Shawn Boos, and grandson, George Richard, in Heidleburgh, Germany. While there, Karen tells me, they toured or shopped in “just about” every Kris Kringle Mart they could locate. These marts are, I suppose, the equivalent in popularity of our malls in the States.

Mrs. Pauline Wikstrom recently returned from a vacation with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Wikstrom, in Ocala, Fla. She then extended her trip a bit to Miami, to visit David Arnago.

Congratulations to Amy Messick on her acceptance into the U.S. Air Force. Amy will depart from Baltimore on Jan. 27 to report for her basic training in San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Ronald Messick and Donna Cecil. Her family sends her off in a flurry of love and best wishes for the future.

A recent 81st birthday dinner was given to “Aunt” Bea Applegate at the home of Matthew and Mitchele, Brittany and Samantha Kirk.
Dale and Diane Hall, formerly of Laurel, were here visiting friends in the area over the weekend.

The Laurel Garden Club members met at St. Philip’s Parish Hall on Sunday, Jan. 19 — their usual monthly meeting with hostesses Diane Hudson and Mary Sergovic. Guest speaker was Joan Wood of Kenton, who discussed the planting, growing and caring of iris. Joan is an iris farmer and owns many, many varieties and nurtures them extensively at spacious areas at her home. The club is planning a trip in May, when she opens her gardens for the public to enjoy, at which time, too, we may learn more on the subject from hands-on experience.

Happy birthday to Stacie Davis on Thursday, Jan. 23, with love from Dad, Mom and brother, Justin.

We express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Joyce J. Horstman.

Our prayers and concerns go out for those who are ill: Evangeline Truitt, Sherry Scanlon, Emma Wootten, David West and Anne Nipe.

Happy January birthday wishes to: Doris Dudasik, Bonnie Huffman, and Marie Morgan on Jan. 25; Harriett MacVeigh, Jan. 26; Louise Dewpsey, Jan. 27; Marie Derrickson, Jan. 29; and Pearl Penuel, Jan. 31.

“Many people who have the gift of gab don’t know how to wrap it up.”

See you in the Stars!
