Club to meet
The Western Sussex Democrat Club will meet Monday, Jan. 31, 6:30 p.m.
at St. Philips Episcopal Church, South Central Avenue, Laurel. Participants
may take a covered dish.
Guest speaker will be Rick Bayard, Democratic state chairman.
Library series focuses on bay
The Laurel Public Library is sponsoring a series on environmental
threats to the Chesapeake Bay region and to the people who work the
water. Meetings are on Thursdays, 7-9 p.m., at Travel Perks, Laureltowne.
On Feb. 3, Gilbert Byron, "Done Crabbin' " will be discussed. This
novel describes Noah Marlin growing up on the Chester River during
the halcyon days prior to the cataclysm of World War I. Miles Barnes,
Eastern Shore Public Library, will be the speaker.

school to host social
Laurel High School will host a social for parents and other community
members Saturday, Feb. 5, from 7-9 p.m.
Anyone interested in attending may contact either Dottie Turner or
Faye Gillespie at the high school, 875-6120.
Program will look at 'block'
The Laurel Historical Society will present a program about the Laurel
Auction Block on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers
at the Laurel Municipal Building.
Ed Kee of the University of Delaware Agriculture Extension Service
has conducted extensive research on the block and is preparing a history
of the block for publication.
Kee is the Delaware State vegetable crop specialist for the Extension
Service and will present the program of the evening.
The block is used by hundreds of farmers from the area in the summer
and provides employment for scores of young people.
The meeting is open to the general public as well as society members.
Light refreshments will follow the program.
