Pediatric first aid course set
A course in pediatric first aid is planned at Delaware Tech, Georgetown. Pediatric First Aid covers managing pediatric emergencies including but not limited to: convulsions, burns, insect bites, poisoning, drowning, fractures and sprains. The course is approved by the Office of Child Care Licensing. Two-session classes meet Wednesdays and Fridays, March 3 and 5 and April 7 and 9. Another session meets Tuesday and Thursday, April 29 and May 1. The cost is $30; all classes meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Participants must attend both sessions to receive a three-year course completion certificate. Nurses home study courses
Nurses who have family or work commitments that make attending seminars difficult can meet continuing education requirements with home study courses offered by Delaware Technical & Community College, Owens Campus, Georgetown. Nurses in ambulatory care, home health care, long term care and hospital settings can benefit from these courses. Topics covered include assessment of the geriatric patient, avoiding medication errors, delegation, time management, and writing skills, and assertiveness in nursing. Each course consists of a written program and a post-test; students will receive individual feedback from the instructor after the post-test. Dates and times can be conveniently arranged throughout the semester. Students can earn 6 contact hours for each completed course; the cost is $59. Cholesterol screening
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will be offering cholesterol screenings on Feb. 19 and 22, from 7:30 – 10:00 a.m. in the Community Room of the hospital. Participants will have the opportunity to select from two types of blood tests. One option is a Total Cholesterol test, which is a non-fasting blood test that will read the total cholesterol level. The cost is $5. The second option is a Lipid Profile test, which requires a 12-hour fasting and reads the HDL and LDL blood levels. Cost for the Lipid Profile is $15. In addition to the cholesterol screening Free blood pressure checks will be offered. Several display tables will be available this year, providing information on nutrition, cardiac rehabilitation and stop smoking program. Employees representing laboratory services, Corporate Education and Cardiac Rehabilitation will assist with the screenings. Flu shots available
Flu season in our area runs through April. We are just approaching what is normally the peak of the season. It is not too late to get your flu shots. Free flue shots will be given on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 600 S. Central Ave., Laurel. The free flu shots are provided as a community service by St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
