Celebrate National Poetry Month at the Laurel Library
Celebrate National Poetry Month at the Laurel Public Library. The Laurel Public Library announces a Teen Poetry Contest and a Poetry Reading by poet, Nancy Mitchell.
The Teen Poetry Contest is open to students in grades 7-12 who reside in the Laurel School District. Prizes will be awarded in two categories, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12. First place winners will receive a $20 Hoyt’s Theater Gift Certificate and second place winners will receive a certificate for two free movie rentals. Entries must be received on or before April 30.
Poet Nancy Mitchell will be visiting the Laurel Public Library on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. to read from her volume of poetry, “Near Surround,” to discuss the creative process, and to answer questions from the audience. Copies of “Near Surround” will be available for purchase at a discounted rate. Light refreshments will be served.

Laurel hosts magician
April 14-20 is National Library Week. Children’s programs at the Laurel Public Library:
Friday, April 19, at 4:15 p.m. - Come and enjoy a special Magic Show, presented by Mike Rose, magician. Directly after the show, a magician’s workshop for children ages 8 to 12 will be offered. Stamp Club show
The Dover Stamp Club will holds its 51st Show on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the W. Reily Brown School in Dover. Includes a children’s table, 12 dealers, exhibits, etc. This year’s theme is “United We Stand.” Free admission. Call Bill Kircher 302-697-7143.
The Seaford Library will hold a Writer’s Workshop on Saturday, April 20, from 1-3 p.m. The Writer’s Bloc from Salisbury will offer a workshop about how to write for publication and for pleasure. The library is located at 402-Porter St., Seaford. Call 629 2524 for details.
Club offering scholarship
The Laurel Civic Club is offering a $1000 scholarship in memory of Robert Ellis. This scholarship is to assist a student who demonstrates strong community service. Seniors in the Laurel School District, but not necessarily attending Laurel High School, are eligible. Applications are available at the Laurel High School, Sussex Tech High School, and the Laurel Public Library. Contact Freddie Brock at 875-3271 for additional information. Fundraiser for Binky Johnson May 8 -Help sought
“Bingo For Binky” — A bingo basket party will be held for Binky Johnson, May 8, at the Laurel Fire Hall. Game time is 6:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Binky, who is recuperating from a hunting accident. Laurel Lioness Scholarship (Deadline May 1)
The Laurel Lioness Club is offering a $500 Scholarship to any Laurel High School senior who will be attending college following graduation. The club is also administrator for the Georgetta Jewel Hickman Memorial Scholarship which will be awarded in the amount of $250 to a female Laurel resident attending college to obtain a degree in the health care field. Guideline requirements for both scholarships are available at the Laurel High School office. Deadline is May 1.
