Laurel Ruritan Barbeque
The Laurel Ruritan Club will have a chicken barbeque on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 10:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. at O'Neal's Antiques, Rt. 13, Laurel. Cost is $5 per dinner. Proceeds to benefit local charities. Celebrating 25 years of community service.

Program gets kids reading, even when school is out
The Laurel Public Library announces the results of its 2001 summer reading program. Two-hundred-sixty-one young people signed up for the program, and 188 children and teens completed the reading requirement and received prizes from the Delaware Division of Libraries and the Laurel Public Library. The children read an all-time high of 8,496 books. Forty-six of the readers read over 50 books each and two girls, Jessica King and Traci Butler, read 360 books each. This year"s theme was "Libraries: Your Passport to the World." More than 1,100 children and adults attended 46 programs, including performances by the Rehoboth Summer Children"s Theater, storytelling by Michael Richmond Boudewyns and Clem Bowen and musical programs from Conga Chick and Miles of Smiles.

The Teen Summer Reading Program, the first of its kind in the area, had a grand prize of a gift certificate and limousine ride to the Atlantic Book Warehouse. Winners were Donna Weber, James Nelson, Eddie Wharton, Anastasia Horsey, Katie Hill, Nathan Pryor, Zack Little and Tom Shortridge. The limo ride was donated by Gene"s Limousine Service of Bridgeville. Sixteen teens completed the Teen Summer Reading Program, and together read more than 350 books.
