Blue Jean Ball for Autism Delaware The 2016 Blue Jean Ball to benefit Autism Delaware will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, from 7-11 p.m. Attendees will spend the evening amid the lush surroundings of Delaware's first and only award-winning winery, Nassau Valley Vineyards, 32165 Winery Way, Lewes. Diabetes prevention class Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will host a two-session Diabetes Prevention Class on Monday, July 25 and Monday, Aug. 29 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Medical Staff Conference Room. This two-session course is designed for individuals who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes which puts patients at a high risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Exercising, maintaining a healthy diet and shedding excess body fat can all help decrease blood glucose levels, improve blood pressure and either delay diabetes or reverse pre-diabetes altogether. Utilizing resources developed by the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), this course provides individuals with basic tools to help them make appropriate lifestyle changes and reduce their risk for developing diabetes. Lymphedema support group Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will host a lymphedema support group on Thursday, July 21 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Seaford Library and Cultural Center. The topic is skin and wound care. This free support group is open to anyone affected by lymphedema including patients, caregivers, and relatives. Meetings will consist of a lecture by health care professionals and medical equipment providers followed by refreshments and an open question and answer session or discussion among participants. Parkinson's education & support group Nanticoke Health Services, in conjunction with CHEER and Care DE and The Methodist Manor House, will hold a Parkinson's education and support group on Thursday, July 21 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Methodist Manor House, 1001 Middleford Rd., Seaford. This support group is free and open to the public. Studies show that the information, training, and counseling that participants receive while attending support group sessions enhances the quality of life, helps to alleviate stress, and may even boost the immune system. This support group is not only helpful for the individual diagnosed with PD, but also for caregivers, friends and family. Group members welcome guest speakers on a variety of subjects related to PD and provide support to each other through small group discussions. Safe Sitter Class at Nanticoke Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will host a Safe Sitter class on Saturday, July 23 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for children ages 11 to 13 who are interested in learning child care essentials and safety. The Safe Sitter course is designed to train teenagers how to be safe baby/child sitters. Components include infant/child development and care, safety, injury prevention, first aid, accident management, rescue breathing and choking management. Nanticoke recognized by Safe Sleep Nanticoke Memorial Hospital was recently recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program as a "Silver Safe Sleep Leader," for their commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep. They are one of the first hospitals in Delaware to receive the title. The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program was created by Cribs for Kids¨, a Pittsburgh-based organization dedicated to preventing infant, sleep-related deaths due to accidental suffocation. In addition to being Cribs for Kids¨ partners, Nanticoke Memorial Hospital was recognized for following the safe sleep guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and providing training programs for parents, staff and the community. Alzheimer's 5K Run/Walk is Aug. 7 The Second Annual Athletes to End Alzheimer's 5k Run/Walk to benefit the Alzheimer's Association Delaware Valley Chapter will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7. The walk is presented by Loftus Wealth Strategies, Millville, and event organizer is Michael Loftus. "Last summer, our first year, we raised $18,000, $3,000 over our goal, for treatment, research and support for those affected by Alzheimer's and their caregivers," said Loftus. "This year, I want to raise $25,000. Registration for runners, volunteers and sponsors is now open." Stroke Support Group Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will host a stroke support group from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, at the Seaford Library & Cultural Center. The two-hour support group meetings consists of guest speakers and breakaway sessions in which caregivers and stroke survivors meet in groups to discuss concerns, providing support and networking. Refreshments will be provided. This support group is designed for individuals who have survived a stroke as well as their families, friends, and caregivers. Bariatric Support Group Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts bariatric support groups the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and the fourth Monday of each month from 6-7 p.m. in the Medical Staff Conference Room at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. This free support group is designed to provide education and support to patients before and after their bariatric weight loss surgery and is open to the public. This month's meetings will be held on Monday, July 25. Childbirth classes offered Nanticoke Memorial Hospital offers childbirth classes on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Ground Floor Conference Room. The class will meet each Thursday for five weeks - four weeks related to childbirth education and the fifth week will be a breastfeeding class. The next session is July 7, 14, 21, 28 and Aug. 4. Maternity education classes will cover pregnancy in general, information to prepare the expectant mother for labor and delivery, and will include a tour of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital's Mother Baby Care Unit. A refresher course is also available for those who have previously taken childbirth classes. Cost of the childbirth course is $50, and the cost for the refresher course is $25.
