DBDCC to offer health screenings

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. (DBCC) will hold a ÁVIDA! Multicultural Screening and Health Fair at the Georgetown Fire Company on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
ÁVIDA! is a multicultural health fair targeted on breast cancer screening, treatment, and survivorship for women, men, and children of all ages. Forums typically feature screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, BMI and bone density in addition to giveaways, children's activities and translation services in Spanish and Haitian Creole.
This free trilingual program will offer health screenings, information about healthy living, community programs, prizes, giveaways and additional resources to the public. The second ÁVIDA! will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Cross in Dover. This trilingual program is in partnership with the Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia, which will also provide passport, consular identification card and birth certificate services.

Affordable health screenings

Residents living in and around Seaford can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic, serious conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening. Christ Lutheran Church, 315 N. Shipley St., Seaford, will host this community event on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Screenings can check for plaque buildup in the arteries related to risk for heart disease, stroke and overall vascular health, cholesterol levels, diabetes risk, bone density in relation to osteoporosis, kidney and thyroid function and more.
Screenings are convenient and accessible for wheelchairs and those with trouble walking. Free parking is available.

Vendors sought for Wings of Hope

The Seventh Annual Wings of Hope A Butterfly Release to benefit Cancer Support Community Delaware will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Medical Arts Building, Rt. 24, Rehoboth.

Lymphedema support group

Nanticoke Rehabilitation Services hosts lymphedema support groups on the third Thursday of each month at the Seaford Library and Cultural Center from 1:30 to 3 p.m. This month's meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17.

This free support group is open to anyone affected by lymphedema including patients, caregivers, and relatives. Meetings will consist of a lecture by health care professionals and medical equipment providers followed by refreshments and an open question and answer session or discussion among participants. Parkinson's Support Group

Nanticoke Health Services, in conjunction with CHEER and Care DE and the Manor House, will hold a Parkinson's education and support group on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Manor House in Seaford. This support group is free and open to the public.
Participating in education/support groups is essential for coping with an illness such as PD or other disorders that impair bodily movement. This support group is not only helpful for the individual diagnosed with PD, but also for caregivers, friends and family. Group members welcome guest speakers on a variety of subjects related to PD and provide support to each other through other small group discussions.

Free weight loss seminars

Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery will host free weight loss seminars on Monday, Aug. 14 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m., at the Nanticoke Training Center located within the Miller Building at 121 S. Front St., Seaford.
These seminars are designed to provide education to individuals considering weight loss surgery to help them make informed decisions on whether surgery is an appropriate option.
The seminars consist of educational presentations by Dr. Tarek Waked to inform individuals about the many benefits of weight loss surgery. Patients and their spouses, family members or friends are welcome to attend. Registration is required.
