Memories are our greatest possessions
By Dr. Anthony Policastro When we think of possessions, naturally we think of material things. However, perhaps we need to expand our definition. Recently, I was listening to the Broadway radio station and the hostess was talking about her fondest show business memories. She made the comment that those memories are some of her fondest possessions. Memories really are possessions. They make us happy when we think about them, which is a way to add joy to our lives. Some memories are clearly at the top of the list. These memories include our wedding, the birth of our children and other family events that are important life milestones. Each of us has memories that are specific to us. For example, I remember the Super Bowl that I went to so fondly that I am not interested in attending another one. To do so would tarnish that memory. I remember attending the Tony Awards with my wife in New York City. A big part of that memory is related to the fact that my wife was with me. I took a trip to Las Vegas without her one time and while I was there, I saw Celine Dion perform. It was the best concert that I had seen in my life. However, it was not as fond of a memory because my wife was not there to share it with me. Family trips also create memories. The more trips we take, the more memories we create. Then there are little things that bring you unexpected joy. For example, I had several of these little things when my children were growing up. When we were going on a trip the song would be: Everybody into the car he said, everybody into the car. The children would respond two, three four. Then I would finish it with Everybody into the car. When we take our daughters and grandchildren out, I sometimes do the same thing. The grandchildren are learning their part. Then there was the teaching of pronouns. The song would go: I like mud, you like mud, he likes mud and she likes mud, we like mud, you like mud, they like mud. The kids would respond Da, dum, dum. Then we would repeat the refrain. Everyone has similar types of memories in their life. When you are having a bad day, dig into this particular trunk of possessions. It could really brighten your day.
Parkinsons Support Group Nanticoke Health Services, in conjunction with CHEER and Care DE and the Manor House, will hold a Parkinsons education and support group on Thursday, Feb. 15 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Manor House located at 1001 Middleford Rd., Seaford. This support group is free and open to the public. Participating in support groups is essential for coping with an illness such as PD or other disorders that impair bodily movement. This support group is not only helpful for the individual diagnosed with PD, but also for caregivers, friends and family. Group members welcome guest speakers on a variety of subjects related to PD and provide support to each other through other small group discussions. Studies show that the information, training, and counseling that participants receive at support groups enhances the quality of life, help to alleviate stress, and may even boost the immune system. Lymphedema support group Nanticoke Rehabilitation Services hosts lymphedema support groups on the third Thursday of each month from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Seaford Library and Cultural Center. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 15. This free support group is open to anyone affected by lymphedema including patients, caregivers, and relatives. Meetings consist of a lecture by health care professionals and medical equipment providers followed by refreshments and an open question and answer session or discussion amongparticipants. Nanticoke hosts bariatric support groups Nanticoke Weight Loss & General Surgery hosts free bariatric support groups three times a month at the Nanticoke Training Center located within the Miller Building at 121 S. Front Street in Seaford. These support groups provide education and support to patients before and after their bariatric weight loss surgery and are open to the public.
Support group meetings consist of guest speakers and presentations to provide useful information about nutrition, supplements, exercise and behavior modifications. Patients and their spouses, family members or friends are welcome to attend. Registration is not required. The general bariatric support group is open to all bariatric patients before and after their surgery and is held the first Tuesday of each month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.. The post-op bariatric support group is designed for post-op bariatric patients and is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. The nutrition-focused bariatric support group is designed to provide nutritional support to bariatric patients and is held the fourth Monday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. Due to scheduling, there will be no nutrition-focused support group this month. Free weight loss seminars Nanticoke Weight Loss and General Surgery will host free weight loss seminars on Saturday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nanticoke Training Center in Seaford. These seminars are designed to provide education to individuals considering weight loss surgery to help them make informed decisions on whether surgery is an appropriate option. Obesity can lead to several health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. For those who suffer with morbid obesity, having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above, it can also affect many organs within the body. Many patients are able to bring their BMI down through lifestyles changes under the care of their physician. For others who have not been able to achieve weight loss through these methods, bariatric surgery can be an effective method to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The weight loss seminars will consist of educational presentations by Dr. Tarek Waked to inform individuals about the many benefits of weight loss surgery. Nanticoke Memorial Hospital offers childbirth classes Nanticoke Memorial Hospital hosts childbirth classes on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Ground Floor Conference Room. The class will meet for a total of five weeks four weeks related to childbirth education and the fifth week will be a breastfeeding class. 2018 Dates:
The maternity education classes are designed to offer information, counseling, support, and hands-on experience to help prepare for a new family member. They will cover pregnancy in general, information to prepare the expectant mother for labor and delivery, and will include a tour of Nanticokes Mother & Baby Care Center. A refresher course is also available for those who have previously taken childbirth classes. The refresher class covers breathing techniques, signs, symptoms, and stages of labor, birthing options, and a tour of Nanticokes Mother & Baby Care Center. The cost of the childbirth course is $50, and the cost for the refresher course is $25. Mothers are encouraged to bring their partner or support person for all courses.
