SHS Community Yard Sale By Linda Allen The Seaford Historical Society will hold its annual Community Yard Sale on the front lawn of the Ross Mansion on Saturday, May 4 from 7 a.m. to noon. Set-up will begin at 6 a.m.10'x10' spaces are available for $10 each. There will be bargains galore and a huge variety of items for sale along with some special goodies such as homemade baked goods and jellies and jams. This year we will raffle off a few prizes, among them a matted pen and ink drawing of the Schooner Victory Chimes by local artist Ellen Rice. Tickets are $1 each or three for $2. Refreshments will be available. The Seaford Historical Society will have sales tables with proceeds benefiting the society. The society will accept donated items to sell (we are unable to accept clothing) beginning Thursday, March 7. Donations may be dropped off at the Ross Mansion between March 7 and May 3. A plastic tub will be available on the front porch of the mansion to deposit items. Gallery 107 Art Classes The following classes will be held in March at Seaford's Gallery 107. Card Making Classes with Betty Speer, 2nd Tuesday of the month. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Class Fee is $20. DNTA flapjack fundraiser On Saturday, March 16 from 8 to 10 a.m., the students of Delaware New Tech Academy (DNTA) at Seaford High School will be serving pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea and soft drinks at Applebee's in Seaford. Students will serve as greeters, hosts/hostesses, bus boys, waiters and waitresses. The breakfast will benefit all students that attend the academy to make field trips available to everyone. Kiwanis Club scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Seaford will be offering three scholarships to graduating seniors residing in the Seaford School District or attending Seaford High School. Two scholarships are funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and will be $4,000 each. The third scholarship for $4,000 is funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and the Janosik Foundation. Laurel Alumni scholarship The Laurel Alumni Scholarship Foundation 2013 scholarship forms are now available. An applicant for the Laurel Alumni Scholarship does not have to be graduating from Laurel High School, but must be a graduating son or daughter of a member, in good standing, of the Laurel Alumni Association for at least three years prior to June 2013. This scholarship is awarded to a Laurel High School graduate who is attending a four year college or university and has met the other requirements. This year's scholarship is $3,600. The George Schollenberger Memorial Scholarship has been established by former students and athletes who were taught or coached by "Coach Schollenberger." This scholarship is awarded to a Laurel High School graduate who has lettered in football for two years and has met the other requirements. The recipient must be attending a two or four year college or university or trade school and has met the other requirements. This scholarship is $1,500. The Carolyn L. Calio Scholarship has been created by the Calio family to honor Carolyn Calio who was very active in the support of the Boys and Girls Club and the Laurel Alumni Association. This scholarship is awarded to a Laurel High School graduating senior who is attending a two or four year college or trade school. The applicant must also meet the other requirement outlined in the application. This scholarship is $1,500. New this year, the Evelyn Messick Scholarship has been created by the "girls" of the Class of 1954. This scholarship for $500 is offered to a Laurel High graduating senior who is also a resident of the Laurel School District. The applicant does not have to be a son or daughter of an alumni member. Alzheimer program at the library In partnership with the Alzheimer's Association of Delaware, the Laurel Public Library will offer an informational program on memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer's disease at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, in the Carpenter Community Room. Evening of Celtic music An evening of Celtic music, March 21, 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Bridgeville Library. Trip to two coastal museums The Seaford Historical Society will sponsor a trip to two coastal museums on Tuesday, April 30. Cost is $55 per person which includes all tour fees, lunch and motor coach transportation. The Ocean City Life-Saving Station was used by the Coast Guard until 1964. The building was originally built in 1891 to save vessels in distress and now houses artifacts pertaining to Ocean City and Worcester County history. Lunch will be served at the Cottage Café in Bethany Beach. In the afternoon, we will visit the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum in Fenwick Island. Annual Beach Ride & Walk Southern Delaware Therapeutic and Recreational Horseback Riding (SDTRHR) will hold its 16th annual Beach Ride & Walk, rain or shine, Saturday, April 6, at Cape Henlopen State Park.
