Victorian Camps offered The Seaford Historical Society is sponsoring one more Victorian Camps for children ages 9 to 12 at the Ross Plantation in Seaford. The camp is available through the Del Tech Summer Camp programs. Victorian Camp II - Daily Life in the 1850s - July 28 - Aug. 1, 9 a.m. to noon- Experience daily life in the 1850s through games, crafts and a scavenger hunt. Participants will learn about the uses of the plants grown on the plantation and the outbuildings on the Ross Plantation to share with the families during a tour on Friday. The children will prepare food for a picnic on Friday. Period clothes will be provided to wear each day to enhance the experience. Cost is $89. Woodland Ferry Festival The 18th Woodland Ferry Festival will take place in the historic community of Woodland, west of Seaford, on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be free pedestrian rides on the ferry, the "Tina Fallon," throughout the festival. The ferry will be closed to vehicular traffic during this time. Live entertainment begins at 10 a.m. with the Good News Tour, a favorite local gospel group. From noon until 2 p.m. the headliners, the Jones Boys Band will perform. Charlie Paparella and the Olivet Church String Band return with their folksy humor and variety of songs. More surprise performers are being invited to join in the fun. There will be several food vendors offering a wide variety of food. Frank-N-Burger, Blazen Grille and the Seaford Oddfellows will return with Abbott's on Broad Creek joining them. Craft/business vendors, exhibitors and demonstrators such as For Woodness Sake will be on hand to show or sell their wares. The Woodland Ferry Association will sell ice cream and souvenirs and hold their traditional Silent Auction. Environmental education program Come to the free Laurel Summer Education Program at Trap Pond State Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 7. Bussing will be provided by Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation. Busses will depart (and return) from Laurel High School and Dunbar Elementary parking lots. Departure time is 9 a.m. and return time is 11:45 a.m. All minors must be accompanied by an adult (a photo ID is required). Note that programs may include mild physical activity (walking short distances, group games, playground time) in outdoor settings. After the program there will be free time to explore on your own, visit the nature center or play on the playground. Participants are also encouraged to participate in the No Cost Summer Meal programs before and after the program. The meal program is available for children ages 18 and younger at Laurel High School and Dunbar Elementary. Breakfast is served beginning at 8:30 a.m. and lunch is served at noon. All "Dolled" Up The Bethel Museum is hosting a new exhibit featuring doll fashions through the ages. There will be dolls with clothing and doll furniture from years gone by as well as dolls wearing more modern clothing. Sandy Williams, a resident of Bethel, has been sewing doll clothes for over 60 years. Her doll clothing is for 18 inch dolls such as the American Girl doll and will be for sale. School supply drive It is not too early to begin preparing for the 2014-2015 school year. The Greenwood Memorial Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 7478 has begun its annual school supply drive which ends on Aug. 20. All contributions are greatly appreciated. The goal of the school supply drive is to give area youth a good start to the new school year. This year the goal is to donate school supplies to five schools in the Woodbridge School District area. Patriotism begins at home and a good selection of patriotic books in libraries enables young readers to discover interesting people, events, inventions, trends, geography, governmental functions, historical eras and other aspects of American life.
