2016 Lecture Series The Seaford Historical Society (SHS) has kicked off its 2016 Lecture Series at the Manor House, 1001 Middleford Rd., Seaford. The lecture series will be held the first Monday of the month through May at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free. After a summer hiatus the series will begin again in September and run through November. WWII photo exhibit The Seaford Museum is pleased to host a photo exhibit, in collaboration with the Delaware Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs, of the WWII photographs of Army photographer, William D. Willis. The exhibit, "Through the Lens," shows the perspective of a Southern Delaware native who photographed the war as he saw it, as well as the war years here at home. The exhibit will be in the Web Exhibit Room until June. The Seaford Museum is located in the old Post Office on High Street in Seaford and will be open to the public on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4.

Pre-Job Fair Workshop The Seaford Library Job Center will offer a workshop, 'How to Prepare for a Job Fair,' on Monday, April 11 from 3-4 p.m., in the Seaford Library Woodruff Room. Little Miss and Miss Seaford Pageant The Little Miss and Miss Seaford Pageant, sponsored by the Seaford Lioness Club, will be held on Friday, April 15. Twelve Little Miss contestants will be accepted. Little Miss contestants must be kindergarteners or first graders who live and attend school in Seaford. Miss Seaford is open to freshmen, sophomores and juniors who reside and attend school in the Seaford School District or reside in Seaford and attend Sussex Tech. Kiwanis Club offers scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Seaford is offering three scholarships to graduating seniors residing in the Seaford School District or attending Seaford High School. Each scholarship is $4,000. Two are funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and one is funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and the Janosik Foundation. Basket Bingo Party Hebron Lodge #14 of Seaford, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, will hold its annual Basket Bingo Party at the Federalsburg (Md.) VFW on Thursday, April 21 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 and the games will run from 7 to 9:30. There will be 21 games. Prizes will be Longaberger baskets or accessories. Smith designs on display For a limited time, the Laurel Historical Society will display original designs of Nancy Smith, an Italian immigrant who moved to America in 1921, finally settling in Laurel in 1941 with her husband James Lee Smith, a Merchant Marine from Portsville. Nancy launched her sewing business to care for her two small children following the death of her husband in 1958 when he was lost at sea. Nancy's business thrived for four decades. Known throughout the Delmarva Peninsula for her stylish sewing and creativity, Nancy will be remembered mostly for the nearly 200 wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses she fashioned from pictures. She especially liked working with brides because "they're so radiant - and I can give them some motherly advice and a few Italian recipes." These designs may be viewed the first Sunday of each month from 1-4 p.m. at the Laurel Heritage Museum, 215 Mechanic St., Laurel.
Stained Glass Window program The Laurel Historical Society in partnership with the Laurel Library will present a program, Laurel's Stained Glass Church Windows, in the Carpenter Community Room of the library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17. Ned Fowler, society president, and Kendal Jones, historian, will narrate a slide show of the colorful windows from St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Christ United Methodist Church, Centenary United Methodist Church, and the former Bethany United Methodist Church at Lowe's Crossroads. Historical background about the windows and brief biographical information on the people memorialized will be included. Delmar Alumni Banquet The 14th Annual Delmar Alumni Association Banquet will be held on Saturday, April 23 at the Delmar Fire Hall. Bethel Museum presents exhibit The Bethel Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special exhibit featuring a large display of Indian artifacts collected by Henry Hutchinson, a Bethel resident and a founding trustee of the museum who was instrumental in forming the Bethel Historical Society in 1975. Artifacts are also on loan from other sources. Most of Hutchinson's artifacts have not been seen since he died in 1976. This is a great opportunity to see hundreds of artifacts that were used by ancient Nanticoke Indian tribes. Learn why the tribes moved here and how they developed methods of survival hundreds of years ago here on Broad Creek. Democratic Spring Dinner US Senator Chris Coons and Joe Trippi, political consultant and former Howard Dean for President campaign chair, will headline the Sussex County Democratic Party's annual Spring Dinner. Youth Game Nights Delmarva Christian Schools is offering Youth Game Nights for all elementary- and middle-school athletes who are interested in playing soccer, basketball, dodgeball, floor hockey, lacrosse, and more. The Youth Game Nights will be held in the Delmarva Christian Milton Campus (DCMC) gymnasium beginning Thursday, March 24, and continue every Friday thereafter for eight weeks (excluding Friday, March 25, and Friday, April 1). Annual Easter Egg Hunt The 16th Annual Easter Egg Hunt organized by the Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce will be held on Saturday, March 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Nutter Marvel Carriage Museum in Georgetown. Egg hunts for kids in various age categories (under age 12) kick-off at noon. Over 6,000 candy-filled eggs will be hidden on the museum grounds. In addition to the free egg hunts, for $3 kids can enjoy unlimited bounces on the moon bounce, face painting and rides on Lil' Toot the Train. Pictures taken with the Easter Bunny and presented in an Easter frame will be available for $5. Food and refreshments will also be available for purchase as well as plants for Easter gifts. An added feature to this year's event is an award-winning puppet show presented by the Sussex County Master Gardeners, "Peter Rabbit's Misadventures in Farmer McGregor's Garden." Heritage Hike is March 26 The Federalsburg Historical Society will sponsor a free Heritage Hike on Saturday, March 26. Everyone is welcome. Join us at the Federalsburg Area Heritage Museum at 8:30 a.m. for orientation. From there we will carpool to the Exeter parking lot on Old Denton Road. Here you will see Exeter, the miller's house, which dates back to 1808, and the old Idlewild Mill. We will then travel over the Marshyhope Creek Bridge to Brooklyn Avenue extended to enter the Idlewild Management Area. The hike will highlight the Ivy/Ivory Ridge area which contains the cemetery of the Phillips family dating back to 1796. After the walk visitors may return to the museum for further research where docents will be available to offer assistance. Del Tech offers trip to Alaska Delaware Technical Community College has partnered with Collette, a premier travel experiences company, to offer the community an opportunity to explore Alaska by land and sea. Ten percent of the cost of each trip booked is donated to Delaware Tech to fund scholarships for underprivileged children in Sussex County to attend summer camps and courses at Delaware Tech's Kids on Campus Program.
