Annual Bluejay Pageant The 2017 Seaford High School Bluejay Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 24, in the Madden Auditorium at Seaford High School. This night, which benefits the scholarship fund of the Student Government Association, will showcase the talent of the entire school. Twelve high school students will compete for the title of Mr. Seaford High and Miss Seaford Bluejay. This years event will feature a variety of musical acts including solos, duets, instrumental selections, dance, poetry, performances by the high school NJROTC, the SHS Gospel Choir and special selections by the SHS All-State Choir and All-County Band. The event is sponsored by the Student Government Association. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for students. Children under 10 are free. Kiwanis offers scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Seaford will be offering three scholarships to graduating seniors residing within the boundaries of the Seaford School District or attending Seaford High School. Two scholarships are funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and will be $4,000 each. The third scholarship for $4,000 is funded by the Seaford Kiwanis Foundation and the Janosik Foundation. Civil Wars Legacy Presentation One hundred fifty years after its end, the effects of the Civil War are still being felt. The war itself was brutal but so was its aftermath. Daniel Pritchett, a retired social studies teacher and former adjunct professor at Delaware State University, will offer a program, The Civil War in History and Memory, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, at the Laurel Public Library. Pritchett will discuss the bloodiest conflict in American history, including its aftermath and how it is still affecting us today. In addition to learning about the war and its legacy, attendees who are reading The Right-Hand Shore by Christopher Tilghman as part of Western Sussex Reads will find this enlightening to explore the historical settings in the book.
Energy Conservation Workshop First State Community Action Agency will hold an Energy Conservation Workshop at the Laurel Public Library on Saturday, April 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The interactive presentation will include ways for families to reduce their energy use and consequently save money, plus connect with energy assistance programs. Legion 19 offers scholarships The Laurel American Legion Post 19 is accepting applications for three $2,000 scholarships this year. Applicants must be high school seniors and provide a letter of acceptance to an accredited institution. Consideration will be given to the applicants scholastic and academic records, SAT/ACT scores, character, work record, extracurricular activities, and community service. One of the three scholarships is reserved for seniors who are direct descendants of a member of the American Legion Post 19. The second scholarship is for any senior who lives in the 19956 zip code regardless of what school they attend. The third scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the selection committee. New Fine Art Exhibit The Bethel Museum invites you to view original art work by the faculty and alumni of the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. This visiting exhibit features blown glass, ceramics, archival digital photography, pen and ink, colored silver gelatin prints, and more. The museum is fortunate to have such a variety of fine art work to see and enjoy. Nine artists are participating, and some of their art work will be for sale. This exhibit ends at the end of March. Located at 312 First St., Bethel, the Bethel Museum is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. The permanent exhibits showing the development of the maritime industry in Bethel during the 1800s, including three and four masted sailing ships, will also be open along with some history of the Nanticoke Indians who lived along Broad Creek hundreds of years ago.

Western Sussex Reads The first-ever Western-Sussex Reads is going on now at the five libraries in western Sussex County. In partnership with the Bridgeville Public Library, Delmar Public Library, Greenwood Public Library, and Seaford District Library, the Laurel Public Library is encouraging citizens to read The Right-Hand Shore by Christopher Tilghman. Anyone interested in borrowing a copy may stop by the library. As part of Western Sussex Reads, the Laurel Public Library is hosting two events at the library. The first event the Civil War in History and Memory is a presentation by Daniel Pritchett on the Civil War and its legacy. Much of The Right-Hand Shore is set during and after the Civil War, and the wars effects play a role in the book. This program, made possible by a grant from the Delaware Humanities Forum, will be held on Tuesday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. and is free open to the public. The second event is a book discussion of The Right-Hand Shore at the Laurel Public Library on Monday, April 3, at 6 p.m. The conversation will include reviewing the book, including the role of the Civil War and its aftermath, plus viewing a reading by Christopher Tilghman. Through a grant from the Delaware Division of Libraries, Western Sussex Libraries is sponsoring an author luncheon and writing seminar at noon on Thursday, April 6, at Heritage Shores in Bridgeville. During the luncheon, Tilghman will discuss The Right-Hand Shore and answer questions from attendees. Tickets are required, and a limited supply is available at the Laurel Public Library. The writing seminar, held at Seaford High School at 6 p.m., will include guidance from Tilghman about the writing process for those interested in writing. The seminar is free and open to the public. Ark Trip On Sept. 23-27 there will be a trip to Williamstown, KY to Ark Encounter. The Ark is built to the approximate measurements of Noahs Ark, which makes it one and a half football fields in length and taller than a four story house.
