Open Mike Christian Night Open Mike Christian Night will be held the first and third Friday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m., at The Lighthouse Church, located at 27225 Kaye Rd., just off Rt. 9, County Seat Highway at Dukes Lumber Road. Consignment Boutique, Art Gallery The Church Mouse Consignment Boutique and Art Gallery, a mission of Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville, is now open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All proceeds go to Union United Methodist Church. Lightning Strikes concert series The Lightning Strikes concert series, at The Lighthouse Church located at 27225 Kaye Rd., just off Rt. 9, County Seat Highway at Dukes Lumber Road, Laurel, are held every second and fourth Saturday of the month. Different styles of music are showcased including Christian rock, rap, hip-rock, metal blues and more, as well as audience participation nights. There is a $4 donation at the door and ages 12 and under are free. Don't forget to ask for a "reward card" to save on future admission and shakes. Beef & dumpling dinner Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, located on Rt. 13A between Seaford and Laurel, will host a beef & dumpling dinner with all the trimmings on Saturday, Oct. 20. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. and carry-outs will be available at 4 p.m.

Praise & Worship Competition The 3rd Annual Mountaire - Delmarva Praise and Worship Competition is Saturday, Oct. 27, at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach. This event will begin at 10 a.m. and is free to attend. Attendees will enjoy a day of music and fellowship as praise teams from across Delmarva compete well into the evening for cash prizes. In conjunction with the event, Epworth will host a chicken and dumpling fundraiser dinner. Praise team registration is open through Oct. 12 and will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. All teams will be competing for more than $12,000 in prize money with the first prize set a $5,000. For more information, contact Roger Marino at Homecoming at Portsville UMC Portsville United Methodist Church, four miles west of Laurel on Dogwood Lane, Portsville, is having their 65th annual homecoming service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14. Special music will be provided by the Delmarva Ramblers, an instrumental and vocal group. Light refreshments will follow the service. All are welcome to join the celebration.

Annual Writers Conference Oct. 20 Vine & Vessels Christian Writers Fellowship will host their 4th Annual "Connecting Pen to Purpose" Writers Conference on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event takes place at Crossroad Community Church, near Georgetown, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Pastor Rick Betts is the official host pastor. John Hollis, community activist and motivational speaker, will be the keynote speaker. Delaware Poet Laureate JoAnn Balingit of Newark will make a special appearance and performance. The conference offers eight workshops designed to sharpen the writer's writing and marketing skills. Several workshops are being offered with special appeal to teen writers and poets. The registration package includes two workshops, a continental breakfast and lunch. Conference rates are youth (ages 10-18) $20, adults (ages 19-61) $40, seniors (ages 62+) $25. A 30 minute manuscript critique session will be available for a $30 fee. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 30. Alliance Church installs new pastor The Atlanta Road Alliance Church, Seaford, is pleased to announce the arrival of the Rev. Jonathan P. Sutton as senior pastor. Pastor Jon's installation service was held on Sept. 16, with Dr. Randall Corbin, Mid-Atlantic district superintendent of the Christian & Missionary Alliance, officiating. A native of Iowa, Pastor Jon earned a bachelor of arts degree in youth ministry from Crown College, St. Bonifacius, Minn., and a Master of Divinity degree in pastoral counseling from Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va. He served as a youth pastor in Wisconsin, an associate pastor in Pennsylvania, and most recently served at Crown College where he was responsible for the oversight of the online Christian ministry degree programs.

Pastor Jon and his wife, Daria, and their four children reside in Seaford. Yard sale and luncheon fundraiser A yard sale and luncheon to benefit Wheatley United Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 beginning at 7 a.m. Breakfast and lunch sandwiches including oyster fritters and homemade soups will be available. Homecoming at Cokesbury UMC Cokesbury United Methodist Church near Reliance will hold a Homecoming service on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. Speaker will be Pastor Lindsay Wessell and music will be provided by Jacob and Shelby Wheatley. Dinner will follow the service.

Cello at Christ Church The board of directors of Old Christ Church League announces its 2012 autumn concert - Cello at Christ Church on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen. Dr. Schoyen graduated with distinction from the New England Conservatory of Music. He completed an MFA at Carnegie Mellon University and a DMA at Stony Brook. An active chamber musician and recitalist, he has given concerts throughout the United States, Germany, Mexico and Spain. Dr. Schoyen has taught at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and at the University of Dayton. He is an associate professor at Salisbury University where he teaches cello and bass, and various other courses. During the summer he serves on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Mich. Dr. Schoyen's solo cello recital will include works by Bach, Gabrielli, Piatti and Bloch.

Homecoming at Galestown UMC Galestown United Methodist Church will hold its 157th Homecoming Celebration on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Martha Callaway and music will be provided by The Sounds of Joy Trio and Randy Marine and Janie Wooters. A buffet style hot meal will be held immediately following the service.

Prayer Garden Hymn Sing Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, located on High Street in Seaford will host a hymn sing in the Prayer Garden on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. Bring a lawn chair and your love of music to sing some old favorites as well as new praise music. Rob Harman will provide the leadership in this tranquil setting. Refreshments will be served following the event.

Women's Conference 2012 John Wesley United Methodist Church will host their annual women's conference on Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Luke's Parish Hall, 202 North St., Seaford. The theme is "Women with Issues" with guest speakers Rev. Idola Batson of Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church, Concord; Elder Audrey Hallett of Jehovah Tabernacle, Berlin, Md., and many other speakers covering a variety of topics. Registration and breakfast will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. followed by the conference from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A $20 registration fee covers the continental breakfast, buffet luncheon and conference materials.

'Free Lunch & Clothing' Seaford Wesleyan Church will sponsor a "Free Lunch & Clothing" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Episcopal Church, 202 North St., Seaford. Everyone is invited to attend this free event.
