Christmas at St. John's UMC St. John's United Methodist Church in Seaford will celebrate Advent beginning Sunday, Dec. 1, the First Sunday of Advent. There will be a service of word and table. Contemporary worship is at 9 a.m. and traditional worship is at 11. On Dec. 8, the Second Sunday of Advent, there will be contemporary worship at 9 a.m., a Bell Prelude at 10:45 and traditional worship at 11. The Third Sunday of Advent, Dec. 15, begins with contemporary worship at 9 a.m. followed by harp and organ prelude at 10:45 and traditional worship at 11. On Thursday, Dec. 19 there will be a Preschool Christmas Pageant. Come and be blessed by the children of St. John's Preschool as they perform their annual Christmas Pageant. Performances are at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. On Dec. 22, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, come and experience "A Child is Born," a cantata by Mary McDonald. There will be one service at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary. A social hour will directly follow in the fellowship hall. Christmas Eve Services on Dec. 24 will feature a contemporary worship service with the Praise Team Band at 7:30 p.m. There will be familiar contemporary music favorites and a brief service with a touch of the traditional including the sacrament of Communion and candle lighting to Silent Night. The Traditional Christmas Eve Service will be held at 10 p.m. St. John's Choir will lead in singing many cherished Christmas Carols of old. Gift Shoppe reopens in Laurel The Gift Shoppe, a fundraiser, has reopened at Christ the Cornerstone Community Church, 28714 Seaford Rd., Laurel. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays through Dec. 14 (except for Nov. 30). Holiday items include Christmas wreaths, garlands, centerpieces, dishware, accessories, quilts, cookie jars, lighthouses and more. Regular items include dishware, furniture, candle holders, glassware, tools, clothing, jewelry and much more. Kettle volunteers Volunteers are needed for the 2013 Salvation Army Kettle Season. The red kettles throughout our communities collect funds to help provide food for families, toys for children, and offer relief for countless of our neighbors in need. In Sussex County, we expect to assist 8 to 10,000 people for the coming year. To volunteer for the western Sussex County locations, contact Lieutenant Aida Roln at 362-2360. Gospel Cafe Christmas Show The Gospel Cafe Country Christmas Show, featuring a talented cross-section of local gospel singers and the ever-popular Gospel Cafe Band, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, at Seaford Wesleyan Church. Join us for our free music ministry as we celebrate the Christmas season and sing praises to our Savior. A full dinner is available for $8 including dessert and a beverage. Child Care Day Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville will hold a Community Child Care Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, for children age 4 through 5th grade. The cost per child is $5 and this money will be used to cover the cost of snacks, lunch and crafts and activities for the children. This event will be staffed by church members and volunteers who have completed and passed all required background checks as part of UUMC's Safe Sanctuary Policy. The Community Child Care Day will allow parents who need to shop for the holidays an economical way and safe environment in which to leave their children.

Holidays at Old Christ Church The public is invited to a Service of Thanksgiving at Old Christ Church Laurel at 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. The Rev. Howard Backus will officiate, using a liturgy from an 18th century prayer book which may have been in use at the time Old Christ Church was built - 1771 to 1772. The board of directors of Old Christ Church League will host a Service of Lessons and Carols at Old Christ Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. Performers will include 12 singers from the Southern Delaware Choral Society, plus two soloists. In between the Advent and Christmas lessons the congregation will join in singing Christmas carols. Dress warmly, and bring blankets and seat cushions because the church is not heated. Call 875-3644 for more information.

Thanksgiving Day Dinner Union United Methodist Church in Bridgeville will host its annual Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner from noon to 2 p.m on Thursday, Nov. 28, in the Fellowship Hall. The dinner, which is prepared and served by volunteers, is open to everyone. There is no cost for the meal but donations are gratefully accepted. Join us for a time of food and fellowship. Community Thanksgiving Dinner A free Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church located at 2381 Neal's School Rd., near Oak Grove. The dinner serves the communities around Oak Grove and Atlanta. This is a traditional dinner with all the trimmings. Dinner will be served promptly at noon on Thanksgiving Day, with the kitchen closing at 1:30 p.m. Reservations are not needed. First come, first served. Donations will not be accepted. Lightning Strikes concert series The Lightning Strikes concert series, at The Lighthouse Church, located at 27225 Kaye Rd., just off Rt. 9, County Seat Highway at Dukes Lumber Road, Laurel, is held every second and fourth Saturday of the month. Wednesdays in Advent Christ Lutheran Church invites the community to join us on the three Wednesdays in Advent - Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Worship is from noon to 12:30 p.m. and lunch is from 12:30 to 1. All three worship services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church. The themes for the three Wednesday services will follow the pattern of the Advent wreath. There are five candles on the Advent wreath - Prophets' Candle, Bethlehem Candle, Shepherds' Candle, Angels' Candle and the Christ Candle. The first four candles ring the wreath and the Christ candle is in the center. The service on Dec. 4 will focus on the message of the prophets concerning the coming Christ at His birth and His second coming at the end of time. The service on Dec. 11 will focus on Bethlehem and a city prepared or not for the coming King of the World. Dec. 18 will focus on the Shepherds and the excitement of hearing God's promises and seeing them come to fulfillment.
