Woodland UMC receives marker
By Don Allen
One hundred and eighty-two years ago brothers and local businessmen, Isaac and Joseph Cannon, deeded a parcel of ground near the banks of the Nanticoke for the construction of "a House of Worship." The deed was recorded in 1833 and a small Methodist Episcopal church was constructed 10 years later. A fire took that structure four decades later and the current chapel was erected and dedicated in 1883. Though the building has been modernized and the Fellowship Hall and Sunday school classrooms had to be rebuilt after an electrical fire in 1981, it still stands on its original foundation and services have been held there since 1843. On Sunday, Aug. 24, the rich history of the Woodland United Methodist Church, "The Friendly Church on the River" was recognized with the dedication of a Delaware State Archives Historic Marker that has been erected in front of the church cemetery. The marker was sponsored by 21st District State Senator Robert Venables and though he was unable to attend, 39th District Rep. Danny Short and Sussex County Council President Mike Vincent joined the congregation, marker committee members and others from the Woodland Community in the dedication ceremony. The dedication was followed by refreshments in the Fellowship Hall.
